American DJ duo Drew Taggart and Alex Pal, known to most as The Chainsmokers, have made history. With a little help from Coldplay, they’ve taken the title of most viewed song on YouTube away from Justin Bieber.
Their latest song and lyric video “Something Just Like This” was viewed more than 9 million times in its first 24 hours on YouTube, over taking Justin Bieber’s 2015 record for his lyric video “What do you mean” which hit 8.2 million on its first day.
The pair came together to perform the song live at the Brit Awards last week and is currently sitting at No. 56 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100 chart’. But judging from its success so far, a quick race up the board won’t be far away.
Funnily enough, this isn’t The Chainsmokers first record. Their song “Closer” accompanied with lyric video broke another YouTube record, becoming the first lyric video to hit over one billion views. It currently sits at 1.2 billion at present.
Now, some of you may be asking, what is a lyric video? It’s a new bandwagon that artists are jumping on, substituting the expensive method of making a music video with a more interesting, cheaper and faster technique. It replaces the visuals with the lyrics from the song. Picture a more creative karaoke machine. The Chainsmokers video’s appeal lies in its quirky hand drawn artistry created by Antonio Mora that has a similar vibe to a flip book.
After hearing this song, many fans are anxious for their debut album, “Memories…Do not open”, which will be heard in the not so distant future.. Six weeks ahead of schedule the band’s Twitter page posted “And it’s done…”.
The album is set to hit stores 7th of April.
